World Humanitarian Day 2017

Humanitarians come together to advocate civilians in conflict are #NotATarget

Humanitarian aid workers travel to the most uncommon destinations on earth to help those in need. To pay tribute to the extraordinary efforts of aid workers, World Humanitarian Day is held every year. In 2017, humanitarians come together in advocating that civilians caught in conflict are #NotATarget.

World Humanitarian Day highlights protection of civilians

World Humanitarian Day is held annually on 19 August to acknowledge and recognize aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service. The day is also an opportunity to rally support for people affected by crises around the world. This year, the United Nations bring attention to the millions of civilians affected by armed conflict on a daily basis in conflict-torn regions.

Through a global online campaign, with the hashtag #NotATarget, humanitarians are raising their voices to defend the most vulnerable people in war zones. They’re calling upon world leaders to do everything in their power to protect civilians in conflict. The campaign includes an innovative collaboration with Facebook Live.

The campaign is a follow-up on UN Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres report on the protection of civilians. Guterres calls for more respect and adherence to the international humanitarian law and human rights, as well as the protection of the civilian population.

Compassionate humanitarian aid workers operate in dangerous and challenging environments all around the world. More than 4,000 aid workers have been attacked in the past twenty years. In 2016 alone, 91 aid workers were killed, 88 were injured, and 73 were kidnapped while on the job. The most dangerous countries for these kinds of attacks are South Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Somalia.

It is in clear violation of international humanitarian law to attack aid workers. Aside from endangering humanitarians, these deplorable attacks threaten operations and the lives of millions of people who rely on assistance to survive the tough conditions that they’re facing.

We proudly contribute by arranging travel for humanitarians and humanitarian organizations to any destination where they’re needed. The images above underline what can be done through collaboration.
