United Airlines lets travelers check in with smart assistant Amazon Alexa

“Alexa, ask United to check me in”

United Airlines is partnering up with Amazon and their smart assistant Alexa to improve travel experiences. Travelers can use the Amazon Alexa devices to check in or receive updates about their flight status.

Check in or receive flight information with Amazon Alexa

Alexa is a widely-used intelligent personal assistant developed by Amazon. Smart speakers like the Amazon Echo and Echo Dot devices have the assistant on board to give information about a wide range of subjects or to let people control their smart homes.

The online retailer introduced the new United Airlines functionality for Amazon Alexa devices on their website. The new United ‘skill’ gives Alexa the ability to make requests for flight status information and availability of conveniences such as Wi-Fi on particular flights. Travelers also can ask Alexa to check in for United flights if it’s within the United States.  The skill is activated each time by saying “Alexa, ask United” followed bya choice of prompt.

If travelers want to know if they’re able to charge devices onboard, you can say “Alexa, ask United: does flight 78 have power outlets?” Or, after linking with a MileagePlus account, you can say “Alexa, ask United to check me in” or “Alexa, ask United what time is my flight.”

United becomes the first U.S.-based airline to offer Alexa skills to travelers. "Every day we connect nearly 400,000 customers to business meetings, loved ones, and new adventures. Introducing the new ability to check in and view flight information with Alexa is an innovation that gives our customers extra time to prepare for a business meeting, play with their children or take a moment to breathe as they get ready for their upcoming flight", says Praveen Sharma, vice president of digital projects and analytics at United, to BizJournals.
