Various countries are currently suffering from the inevitable devastating backlash from war which directly affects the local population. Nobody can live a happy life in a war zone. 2016 was unlikely to bring an improvement from the woes of 2015: War still rules many nations. Among the countries and wars with the biggest humanitarian consequences, such as refugees, are Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Yemen, and the Lake Chad basin. The photo listed below depicts the vulnerable people who are struck by armed conflict.

This photo depicts refugees arriving in Greece in a small dinghy boat from Turkey. In 2016, many Syrian, Afghanistan and African refugees docked their boats near Mytilene Lesvos.More refugees are dying in desperate attempts to reach safety in Europe than ever before as political leaders couldn’t find a solution to conflicts fueling the refugee situation. At least 3,000 migrants have been killed while undertaking treacherous journeys across the Mediterranean.

Lise Grande, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, warned that the battle over Mosul could cause a dramatic increase in refugees. "The UN estimates that in a worst-case scenario, Mosul could represent the single largest most complex humanitarian operation in the world in 2016," she said.

Yemen is experiencing a 'humanitarian catastrophe.' More than 21 months of conflict have devastated the country, and left 18 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. The UN says more than 7,270 people - mostly civilians - have been killed and 38,280 others injured since the conflict between forces loyal to exiled President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi and those allied to the Houthi rebel movement escalated in March 2015.
