Helping Vulnerable Locations Towards a Sustainable Future

To achieve sustainable development, it is essential to eradicate poverty, unsustainable patterns and promote sustainable ones. Through promoting greater opportunities for all, limiting inequalities and raising the basic living; all these while new and emerging challenges arise. These overarching objectives are required to make changes that last and have maximum impact.

Vulnerable Locations

Increasing poverty, climate change, rapid urbanization, food insecurity and environmental degradation are some of the current and emerging global challenges.  A better, more inclusive understanding of sustainable development and the associated changes in economic, social and environmental conditions is needed. (World Economic & Social Survey, 2013).

Each country faces specific challenges on the path to achieving sustainable development. It is important to recognize the unique tests that most vulnerable locations such as in Africa and other underdeveloped countries are facing. Particular attention is also needed for countries in situations of conflict and civil wars.

Supporting developing countries in their efforts to eradicate poverty and promote empowering of the poor as well as empowering of people in vulnerable locations, is crucial. This includes reducing the barriers people face while trying to tap into opportunities, increasing the productive capacities, promoting sustainable agriculture and realizing full and productive employment for all people. These challenges can only be faced through effective and inclusive social protective policies, aimed at reaching internationally agreed targets, including the Sustainable Development Goals.

Opportunities for people to have an influence on their lives and futures are fundamental. People in vulnerable locations need to participate in decision-making, should have their voices heard and their concerns addressed. Sustainable development is only achieved with a broad basis of people, governments, civil society and the private sector. All parties have to work together to secure the future we all want for present and future generations.

The private sector is a valuable instrument in the fight against poverty and stimulation of notable economic growth. A private sector that is dynamic, efficient and socially responsible can facilitate entrepreneurship and innovation for all persons, including for women, the poor and the vulnerable. This can also be done on a local level. The private sector can have a crucial role in improving income growth, raise productivity, empower women and protect labor rights.

But sustainable development can only be achieved if the circumstances are set by local, national and international governments. Democracy, a well-functioning governance and the application of the rule of law are at the core of achieving all of these. Institutions on all levels need to be transparent, accountable and democratic to improve all lives including the lives of people in need.

In the end, people are right at the very center of sustainable development. Hands on the ground and working together, make a better world possible. A world that is just, equitable and inclusive. This inspires economic growth, eradicates poverty and helps develop and implement an efficient food system for people in vulnerable locations.
