Indispensable Global Events in July to Mark Your Agenda

In this series of articles, we highlight and expound on the global development agenda. We do this by providing insight on important global events occurring in the upcoming month which focus on development in all countries around the world. Today, we present some important global events in the month of July.

Why commemoration days about global events are important

Today, information about global events spread through social media and the world-wide-web at a terrifying speed. More terrifying is the way technology is fast changing to make even more information available to anyone who cares to click on a link or listen to a podcast. An enormous amount of information enters our minds every day from various sources. It is our responsibility to put this invaluable information into perspective and make sure that outstanding achievements throughout history or ongoing challenges are not overlooked or worse; forgotten. Listed below are commemorative days which help remind us of important humanitarian issues and developments in the month of July.

1 July - International Day of Cooperatives
This day is not strictly held on the 1st of July of every year. It's planned for the first Saturday of the month. The aim of this International Day is to increase awareness on cooperatives. We also highlight with intend to strengthen the goals and objectives of the international cooperative movements. This year, inclusion is the theme with "Co-operatives ensure no one is left behind", as its slogan.

11 July - World Population Day
World Population Day is a commemorative day to focus attention on the important and urgent population issues. This year, the world population reached 7,500,000,000. The increasing population asks for a growing awareness of matters such aslike the necessity of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human rights.

15 July - World Youth Skills Day
Young people are three times more likely to be unemployed than adults. They are also exposed to the lower quality of work and have more insecure school-to-job transitions. World Youths Skills Day highlights the view that everyone should have the opportunity to discover and develop their talents. A more prosperous future for individuals, communities and countries alike is possible through skills.

18 July - Nelson Mandela International Day
For 95 years, 18 July was Nelson Mandela's birthday. Now, the UN asks people around the world to mark this day by making a difference in their communities. Everyone has the ability and the responsibility to improve the world and Mandela Day is the perfect occasion for everyone to take action and inspire change wherever they are.

28 July - World Hepatitis Day
400 million people in the world are affected by viral hepatitis effects. Every year 6 to 10 million people are newly infected. This day seeks to raise awareness for the disease as an estimated 95% of people with hepatitis do not know there are infected.  At the 2016 World Health Assembly, 194 governments adopted the goal of eliminating hepatitis B and C before 2030.

30 July - International Day of Friendship
The common philosophy behind the International Day of Friendship is the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures, and individuals can build bridges between communities and inspire peace efforts. To mark the event, the United Nations encourages governments, international organizations and civil society groups to hold activities that contribute to promoting dialogue among civilizations.
