Hunger is one of the greatest problems we face. Consequently lots of charities, NGO’s, and other projects are taking on this issue and are dedicated to fighting hunger. Today we present 25 organizations dedicated to fight hunger. Hunger has often to do with poverty. Most organizations on the list are also focused on lifting people out of poverty. These organizations and charities are trying to make a difference in the world. Millions of people, including many children around the world, do not have enough to eat. Here is a list of 25 organizations dedicated to fight hunger.

1. Action Against Hunger

Action Against Hunger is committed to ending world hunger. “The mission of Action Against Hunger is to save lives by eliminating hunger through the prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition, especially during and after emergency situations of conflict, war, and natural disaster. From crisis to sustainability, we tackle the underlying causes of malnutrition and its effects by using our expertise in nutrition, food security, water and sanitation, health and advocacy.”

2. Feeding America

First of all, this is the #1 charity in America fighting hunger. “Feeding America, formerly America’s Second Harvest, is the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Our mission is to feed America’s hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger. Each year, the Feeding America network provides food assistance to more than 25 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States, including more than nine million children. 

3. Bread for the World Institute

This faith-based organization confronts American and world leaders about their policies to end hunger everywhere. “Bread for the World Institute (BFWI) provides policy analysis on hunger and strategies to end it. Therefore the Institute educates its advocacy network, opinion leaders, policymakers and the public about hunger in the United States and abroad. BFWI is the research and educational partner of Bread for the World, generating studies on hunger issues and vital educational resources.

4. Food Bank for New York City

This organization oversees feeding New York City’s hungry, a big job for anyone. “The Food Bank For New York City was founded in 1983 to address the growing needs of people seeking emergency food assistance in New York City. Food Bank For New York City recognizes 25 years as the city’s major hunger-relief organization. Working to end food poverty and also increase access to affordable, nutritious food for low-income New Yorkers throughout the five boroughs, the Food Bank’s initiatives.

5. Freedom from Hunger

This California-based charity has also been helping the poor for over 70 years. “Established in 1946, Freedom from Hunger is an international development organization that brings innovative and sustainable self-help solutions to the fight against chronic hunger and poverty. Freedom from Hunger combines microfinance with health and education services to equip very poor families to improve their incomes, safeguard their health and achieve lasting food security.”

6. The Hunger Project

The mantra of this global organization is: Empowering Men and Women to End Their Own Hunger. “Founded in 1977, The Hunger Project is most of all, a global, strategic organization committed to the sustainable end of world hunger. In Africa, Asia, and Latin America, The Hunger Project empowers people to lead lives of self-reliance, meet their own basic needs and build better futures for their children. The Hunger Project carries out its mission through three essential activities.

7. Heifer International

The mission of Heifer International is to empower people and help them get out of poverty. Part of the way they do this is by donating livestock such as cows, goats, chickens, etc., or funding similar programs. “Founded in 1944, Heifer Project International is a sustainable development organization that works to end hunger and poverty and protect the earth. Through livestock, training and Passing on the Gift, Heifer has helped 15.5 million families in more than 125 countries improve their quality of life.

8. Meals on Wheels

Aimed at ending senior hunger, Meals on Wheels delivers meals to individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. With almost 1 million volunteers, MOW is active in all 50 states and the U.S. territories. Your charitable donations are best used by giving to a local Meals-on-Wheels organization.

9. Share Our Strength

The goal of SOS is for no child in America to grow up hungry. “Share Our Strength (SOS) is a national organization that works hard to make sure no kid in America grows up hungry. We raise funds through our pioneering culinary events (Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation, Great American Dine Out, A Tasteful Pursuit and Great American Bake Sale) and award grants to support successful organizations across the country that work to provide children and their families with the healthy food.

10. Food for the Hungry

This faith-based organization has worked since 1971 to end global hunger. They get a Grade A from Charity Navigator. Charity Watch reports that this charity is under investigation for misreporting the value of medicines used in 2009, among other things.

11. UNHCR

The UN Refugee Agency is a United Nations program with the mandate to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people, and to assist in their voluntary repatriation, local integration, or resettlement to a third country.

12. Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is a Protestant Christian movement and an international charitable organization structured in a quasi-military fashion. The organization reports a worldwide membership of over 1.5 million consisting of soldiers, officers, and adherents known as “Salvationists.” Its founders, Catherine and William Booth, sought to bring salvation to the poor, destitute, and hungry by meeting both their “physical and spiritual needs.” It is present in 128 countries running charity shops and operating shelters for the homeless, and providing disaster relief and humanitarian aid to developing countries.

13. Red Cross

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement with approximately 97 million volunteers, members, and staff worldwide which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering. The movement consists of several distinct organizations that are legally independent of each other but are united within the movement through common basic principles, objectives, symbols, statutes and governing organizations.

16. ONE

ONE is a campaigning and advocacy organization of more than seven million people around the world. It is taking actions to end extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. They believe the fight against poverty isn’t about charity; it is more about justice and equality.

17. Trickle Up

Trickle Up has been a pioneer elevating people out of extreme poverty since 1979. They’ve done this by helping more than one million of the poorest, most vulnerable people move to greater economic self-sufficiency and connection with their communities.

18. Oxfam

This international confederation of 18 organizations working together with partners and local communities in more than 90 countries. Oxfam is determined to change our world by finding practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive.

19. CARE

CARE is a global leader in a worldwide movement dedicated to ending poverty. They are known everywhere for their unshakeable commitment to the dignity of people. CARE works around the globe to save lives, eradicate poverty, and achieve social justice.

20. Jubilee USA

The Jubilee USA Network is an alliance of more than 75 US organizations, 550 faith communities, and 50 Jubilee global partners. Jubilee is building an economy that serves, protects, and promotes the protection of the most vulnerable.

21. Mercy Corps

Mercy Corps is a leading global organization powered by the belief that a better world is possible. In a disaster, in hardship, and in more than 40 countries around the world they partner to put bold solutions into action. They aim to help people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within in the present and for the future.

War on Want works to achieve the vision of a just world through their mission to fight against the root causes of poverty and human rights violations. They advocate for this as part of the worldwide movement for global justice. They concentrate on the key areas where they can add the most value and have the most impact on change.

24. Innovations for Poverty Action

Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is a research and policy, non-profit organization that discovers and promotes practical solutions to global poverty problems. IPA brings together researchers and decision-makers to design, rigorously evaluate, and refine these solutions and their applications, ensuring that the evidence created is used to improve the lives of the poor.

25. Concern Worldwide

Concern Worldwide also works with the world’s poorest people to transform their lives. It’s an international humanitarian organization dedicated to tackling poverty and suffering in the world’s most vulnerable countries. By working in partnership with the people in these countries, they’re directly enabling them to improve their lives, as well as using their knowledge and experience to influence decisions made at a local, national and international level that will significantly reduce extreme poverty.
